Dear Lonely Girl,
I know it’s difficult to wait. You may be that girl who never had a boyfriend, or you might be the one left with scars from the past. Whoever you are, I’m telling you this: Wait for the man who makes you his number two.
I know the title is quite startling because you might think to yourself, “Hey, shouldn’t I be number one? Shouldn’t I be his first priority?” I’m telling you this because being number two is better than being number one if his number one is God.
Wait for the man who makes you his number two. When you first meet him, he will offer you with friendship instead of flirting. He won’t pepper his words with careless affection, but he will try to know you more–he will ask about your hobbies, the things that make you happy, your goals and dreams. He will be interested in your heart and mind more than how pretty or sexy you are. He knows this because just like God, we are to emulate how He looks at the heart, and not outward appearances. (1 Samuel 16:7)
Wait for the man who makes you his number two. When he decides to pursue a serious relationship with you, he will ask for your parents’ blessing. He is mature enough to know that in decisions as big such as these, we are to consider the opinions of the authoritative figures in our lives. He knows this because we are to honor our parents (Exodus 20:12), and that includes asking for their blessing.
Wait for the man who makes you his number two. When he and you are in a committed relationship, he will try his best to protect both your hearts and bodies. He will not lead you into sin, or expose you in situations where it’s easier for you to be tempted or swayed by emotions. He knows this because He knows that the heart is deceitful above all things (Jeremiah 17:9), and we are to flee from sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18).
He won’t use his words to disrespect you or cause petty arguments. He will use his words to rebuke you in love if needed, and to encourage and uplift you because he knows that we are to build each other up with the words we say (Ephesians 4:29).
He won’t love you in shallow words, but he will show it in actions because we are to love in deed and truth (1 John 3:18).
He might not be exactly your type, but realize this–if you wait for him and find him, he will be worth it–and you will only see his worth if you make him your number two as well.
For the meantime, focus on your number one, God. He is the One who can do all that your number two can do, and even more. He showed you the greatest love any man can give when He gave up His life for you on the cross. And He assures you this, with or without your number two, you can find love and contentment in Him.
Know that you may be alone, but don’t ever think that you will be lonely. This is God’s promise:
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:33
Love,
Your Sister
